Born in Sanford, Florida, Sandra Washington came to Sarasota
at age five. She attended a business college in Washington,
D.C. before moving to Jacksonville, Florida where she lived
for four years. She attended Edward Waters College and has
taken courses at Manatee Community College. Sandra relocated
to Sarasota in 1970 where she worked for the City of Sarasota
for 22 years. She started the Keep Sarasota Beautiful Program
in 1987.
In 1992, Sandra transferred
to Sarasota County to direct the countywide Keep America
Beautiful affiliate. Sandra has been employed with the City
and County for a combined 40 years.
Managing the day to day operations of the Keep
Sarasota County Beautiful program. Sandra is accountable
to the Environmental Services Business Center. Her major
responsibilities are to coordinate programs and projects
to be implemented by the county.
Sandra is the host and producer of a one-hour
talk show on Comcast Cable Blab TV, Channel 21, every other
Tuesday evening. This show originated as a 30-minute feature, "Women
in the 90's" and proved so popular after one year, the
general manager/owner asked Sandra to expand the production
to a longer format known as,"The Sandra Washington Show." Guests
and their topics are not limited to area businesses, but
include government, non-profit organizations, entertainment
and educational focus. Local professional and business supporters
underwrite the show.
Sandra has hosted many other TV shows, such as the County's
Y2K Millennium on Access 19. She also hosted a TV show for
a local doctor for 6 months.
Among her many contributions to the citizens of the area,
she has participated on the Chamber of Commerce Sarasota
Leadership Steering Committee, (graduate of the class of
1993), a member of North Sarasota Business and Professional
Women's Club; Ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce; United
Way Allocations Committee, Putting on the Glitz Fashion Show
Committee, Black Achievers Program Steering Committee, The Friends of Myakka River,
Inc., Take Stock in Children Mentor, Keep America Beautiful Affiliate of Florida Board of Directors and McIntosh Middle School Advisory Council.
Outside of our immediate area, she is a member of the National
Forum for Black Public Administrators, the National Association
of Executive Females and the Florida Communication Committee
of Keep America Beautiful. She serves on the Keep America Beautiful Affiliate of Florida state executive board as vice president. Sandra is also a member of the
Sarasota County NAACP Branch organization.
Sandra has received the Woman of Color,
Status of Women, Community Service and Soldiers without
Swords Awards, her name was submitted for the 1999 "She knows Where She's
Going Award" to name a few. Sandra was honored with The Woman of the Year award 2010.
She is a member of Mount
Raymond Full Gospel Baptist Church and has one son, Toddrick.
Along with the above-mentioned, Sandra
has been a fashion model for more than twenty-five years.
She has been in the acclaimed "Putting on the Glitz" production
for many years. In addition to her modeling and
other talents, she has also performed television and radio
commercials, as well as voice-overs for television and
commercial PSAs.
In her spare time, Sandra enjoys exercising, practicing and learning about healthy living, dining, movies,
and reading. |
